Activities along the W3R in 20042004 July-Sept: Lee Patrick Anderson's Walking in the Footsteps of History was designed to scout out the route in preparation for the 2006 full-route march. Lee is a living historian and docent at the Revolutionary War site of Fort Mifflin (PA). He followed the route of the allied armies from Newport RI to Yorktown VA (in four stages) via Providence RI, Hartford CT, Danbury CT, Ardsley NY, Trenton NJ, Philadlelphia PA, Baltimore MD, Annapolis MD, Washington DC, and Williamsburg VA. |
Activities along the W3R in 20052005 April 22: The W3R-Delaware placed an interpretive sign (funded by the SAR and DAR) next to the Grand Opera House in Wilmington DE to commemorate the five-month period in 1782-3 when Lauzun's Legion (French Army) of 550 soldiers were posted in buildings here. This was was dedicated during the 2005 annual meeting of the W3R-US. Seethe photo-report and the sign itself [PDF file] (simulated at low resolution). 2005 May 14: Mt. Vernon VA -- dedication of a W3R commemorative sign [Durf McJoynt] 2005 July 8-10: Newport RI: Celebration of the 225th anniversary of the 1780 arrival of French General Rochambeau and the French Expeditionary Force. M. Gerard Priet of the France Society SAR spoke about Admiral Ternay, who was in command of the French fleet that brought the French Expeditionary Force to Newport and who died there six months later. Activities along the W3R in 20062006 Feb 11: The W3R-Delaware sponsored a symposium on Black Patriots in the Revolution. 2006 May-July: The W3R-Connecticut installed ten interpretive signs for CT along the W3R: 2006 May-June: The W3R-RI helped organize a Scout march along the W3R in Rhode Island. The Scouts spent five weekends tracing the fifty miles of trail, ending with a ceremony with CT Scouts near the RI-CT border. See photo-report on RI Scouts. 2006 June 16-18:A symposium on France and the American Revolution at Brown University was followed by a parade to the State House, where Gov. Carcieri reviewed the troops and held a ceremony See photo-report on symposium. 2006 June-October: "America's March to Yorktown"
Sept 28-Oct 1: "A Revolutionary Weekend in Delaware" was enjoyed by over a thousand participants and received several pages of coverage in the local media. See the DE Weekend Photo-report. Oct 10: The W3R-DC joined the DAR and CAR in Georgetown to commemorate the renaming of a bridge to honor Lauzun's Legion and in Washington DC to celebrate the restoration of monuments to Generals Lafayette and Rochambeau. 2008 Oct 17-19: W3R-USA Meeting in Yorktown VAThe Fall Board of Directors meeting of the W3R-USA was held in Yorktown on Oct 18. Thirteen directors and 12 members or friends of the W3R were present. Minutes of the Board Meeting and Workshop

the French government's award of Academic Palms for her career in historic preservation
and education, including her leadership roles in the W3R -USA.

That afternoon several members of the W3R participated as a unit in the Yorktown Day Parade, carrying our new banner (see photo below). We were surprised and pleased to find another group marching with a W3R banner -- The French Honor Society from the high school in Grafton, Virginia. We stopped to chat with them for a while but forgot to get a photo. |
