Companion OrganizationsThe following organizations have provided-- goals which have inspired individuals to action -- members who work on or advise on local / state / national activities related to the W3R -- events that may be coordinated for the 225th anniverssary -- influence to promote government or private funding or action Public AgenciesFor several decades there have been efforts at the local and state level to preserve W3R sites and to explain the events and people of the W3R. These organizations, more numerous than can be listed here, have been vital to the current effort to joint the sites and sections of the trail into a more coherent whole.State Historic Preservation Officers (SHPOs) and their staff and advisors have kept the need for respecting and learning from our history before state legislatures and private foundations so as to provide the funds and legislation needed for effective action. The National Park Service (NPS) has a special program and Web site on the American Revolution -- called Lighting Freedom's Flame In 1999 The NPS was directed by the U.S. Congress to develop summaries of the justification, resources, and educational and tourism potential of the W3R. These will provide the basis on which the U.S. Congress will decide whether or not to designate the W3R as a National Historic Trail. If approved, the W3R would be the first National Historic Trail located east of the Mississippi River. Re-enactment OrganizationsBrigade of the American Revolution (BAR) is a national organization coordinating the efforts of many groups that portray the activities of American military units from the Revolutionary War. Lineage OrganizationsDaughters of the American Revolution (DAR) is an international lineage organization which represents descendants of those in America and elsewhere who supported the struggle of the United States to achieve an independent government. Its goals are patriotic, educational, and historic. As part of their celebration of the 225th anniversary of the American Revolution they established a committee to support the development of the W3R, with a designated representative in each state along the W3R.The Society of the Cincinnati is an international lineage organization which represents some of the descendants of the officers who served in the Continental Army under Gen. Washington or who served in the French Expeditionary Force under Gen. Rochambeau. The Society of the Cincinnati Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) is an international lineage organization which represents descendants of those in America and elsewhere who supported the struggle of the United States to achieve an independent government. Its goals are patriotic, educational, and historical. As part of their celebration of the 225th anniversary of the American Revolution they established a W3R Liaison Committee to support the development of the W3R, with a designated representative in each state along the W3R. French AssociationsThe Branche Française of the SAR organized an international Alliance Day program in February 2003 to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Amity and Commerce -- the first diplomatic recognition of the United States as an independent nation.Socieity Française des Cincinnati is the French branch of The Society of the Cincinnati (see that listing). It represents descendants of the officers who served in the French Expeditionary Force under Gen. Rochambeau. Souvenier Français is an international organization dedicated to marking the graves of French soldiers and sailors around the globe. The Alliance Française is a world-wide organization to encourage the study of the French language and literature, promote French culture and foster friendly relations between France and other nations. History AssociationsLocal historical societies and their directors, often alone and overwhelmed, have tried to save the sites that are being lost every year.Expédition Particulière is an association of people interested in the members and activities of the French Expeditionary Force (Expédition Particulière). Hermione-La Fayette Association is an international group which is building a replica of the ship that brought Lafayette and other European military advisors to the United States to help the Continental Army. |
