General Information

The Cooch's Bridge Chapter was organized on May 14, 1902. It is named for Cooch's Bridge, where Delaware's only Revolutionary War battle took place on September 3, 1777. The battle was a delaying action to slow the British advance toward the Brandywine and Philadelphia. It is said that the Stars and Stripes were first flown at this engagement.

Currently, the chapter has 200 members and is the largest of seven chapters in Delaware. Cooch's Bridge chapter celebrated its 100th anniversary with a special meeting in May 2002. The chapter is active in the community.

  • Bingo parties are held for Veteran patients at the VA hospital several times a year.
  • Flags are placed on the graves of the Revolutionary War soldiers in the Head of Christiana Cemetery on July 4th.
  • The chapter helped host nine members of the Rochambeau Chapter and their families from France when they traveled the Rochambeau Road in October, 1996.
  • The chapter also supports national DAR projects such as collecting Campbell's soup labels and proofs of purchase which are exchanged for valuable school equipment for the Tamassee DAR school in South Carolina.
  • The chapter presents JROTC medals to local high school students.
  • The chapter produces 30 second spot announcements on an interesting historical fact for a local radio station
