The acronym W3R is used in several ways:
-- W3R alone means historic route and activities in 1778-1783
    -- W3R-US means the present-day organization,
          which sponsors research, places signs,
          and organizes commemorative and educational
          activities along the trail.

History and Documents of the W3R-US

The Late 1900s

Research on and development of the W3R was carried out primarily in Connecticut. In December 1999 representatives of history groups from several states - met to develop a plan to develop the W3R in the entire nine-state area covered by the W3R.

From 2000 to 2003 October

A small leadership group focused on informing a large E-mail list of the historical aspects of the W3R and the National Park Service's progress in developing the reports mandated by Congress about the justification, feasibility, impact, and proposed managent and development of the W3R as a National Historical Trail.

2003 October -- Representatives from several states agreed that the W3R should have a more formal structure and incorporate as a 501(c)3 organization that could attract a base of members, generate income through dues and grant proposals, and provide organized work groups with long-term goals to assist with development of the trail.
